Aaron Rai Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated remarkable composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense playoff following a rollercoaster final round of competition.

The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie from just over eight foot to clinch the victory, repeating his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff victory over Fleetwood.

Final Round Drama

The challenger edged one shot clear with two holes remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last green.

Play-Off Decider

This led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to claim the title and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even more person. To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” said Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the present how it is. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”
