Aaron Rai demonstrated remarkable composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense playoff following a rollercoaster final round of competition.

The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie from just over eight foot to clinch the victory, repeating his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff victory over Fleetwood.

Final Round Drama

The champion entered the final round with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.

The challenger edged one shot clear with two holes remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last green.

Play-Off Decider

This led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to claim the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in prize money.

To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” said Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the present how it is. Notable Contenders

The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of leading the standings were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. England’s Mansell produced an superb last round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
