At least 64 Killed in Rio de Janeiro's Most Extensive Law Enforcement Operation on Criminal Groups

No less than 64 people were killed in a law enforcement action cracking down on the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's records.

Four security agents lost their lives during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials stated. More than 80 individuals were detained.

Fierce clashes commenced when approximately 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization countered with gunfire, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives stated.

The International human rights organization expressed being "shocked" by the police operation, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Raid Aftermath

The area of favelas near Rio's airport is seen as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Government representatives said at least 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Many residents were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Local Reaction

Locals have likened the hillside area - housing around 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the raid started.

Transport routes stay blocked throughout the region.

Gang Growth

The Red Command group has been growing their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.

Security forces said more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the operation, together with multiple guns.

Raid Preparation

The coordinated mission by civil and military police follows a twelve-month inquiry.

Dozens of the suspects are believed to be affiliates of a group from the northern region who are at the moment taking refuge in the city.
