Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in a seemingly premeditated gas explosion at a rural property in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house near the Verona region to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

All three victims who died belonged to the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

Two individuals got detained at the location and one more individual who ran away subsequent to the explosion was apprehended not long after. The trio have been transported to the hospital.

The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the area revealed the structure reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” said the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to evict the three family members in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The leader of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the property was under an eviction order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the residents set off the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno told the media.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the detonation directly hit our members,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the interior minister stated.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the blast consisted of 11 other members of the military police as well as three officers of the state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had occurred on a level above the entrance and told the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the explosion, he said officers had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas canisters being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents told reporters, adding that the family members had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister joined other elected representatives in honoring the three men who had died in the performance of their duties.
