‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s path from rehabilitation to scoring with Athletic
The first time the Athletic striker played in English soil, an young playing for Athletic Bilbao B against Bundesliga youth at Wycombe’s stadium in fall 2015, he scored. On his next visit he took the field in British turf, against the English side two months later, he converted. Another occasion, against Pep Guardiola’s team not long later, sure enough, he did it once more. When he returned to Manchester to face United at the sports complex in that year, he found the back of the net. A spectacular strike, also. “In fact,” he states, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve netted.” Therefore the team did their duty: they took him off.
“I became very upset,” the Athletic striker admits, and then he starts laughing. “There must be a video somewhere. We went to play United and I performed well. They kept me out of the second half: I hadn’t yet signed my contract, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. I’m unsure regarding the Magpies’ pursuit, but I recall seeing about Man United, the typical thing. It’s unclear how true it was, but had they contacted me, I would have wanted to stay at Bilbao. I feel lucky to be here.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At the facility, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is about to start; after it, the short journey to the airport and another trip to England, on this occasion to take on the Magpies in the Champions League on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase lights him up. It’s turning out to be a tough year for the club, due in part to the pressures of being here. Defeated late on in the local rivalry, they have won only one of their past eight league games and been defeated by Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in Europe. However, consider the broader view, the memorable evenings and those that lie ahead, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.
In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, Gorka has been a Europa League semi-finalist, prevented from reaching a domestic final by the English giants, and has traveled on a traditional boat up the Nervión estuary accompanied by countless supporters after lifting the trophy, the first title in a long wait. He’s now the club’s leading marksman in the European competition, where they are distinctive and making their first appearance in a long period. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.
The player believed it challenging enough just to make the first team and he was right. Born to the one-time rival player Xabi Guruzeta and a regular attendee at the opposition side, the forward is a product of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that developed Mikel Arteta, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. He signed for Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in the 2018 season, he suffered a serious knee problem, the cut, a relegation and a call back before he could truly get a chance, making his comeback to live the best days of his career.
“Joining the setup doubting you’ll make the top level but every phase you progress through you’re persisting and you can notice the proximity. You make it and … you’re sent away.” He had limited game time in a handful of matches between his bow and that period. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances there and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A massive setback but I reflect on it as a turning point because it forced me to alter the outlook. Recovering from a long-term injury is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You cultivate routines new to you. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I attended practice and then head home, as a youngster does. At the complex, you have everything, so utilize it all. Training, prehab. Strength training. With hip imbalance, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, make it a 12 or a 14. Every small aspect: do them.
“Among professionals you’re going to collide with opponents who have crashed into players repeatedly. Highly robust. I look at photos of me before: I had slender legs. So what happens, happens. Present-day images and it’s totally different. The setback taught me. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”
Game time is essential. The striker moved upset in that year, in his early twenties, joining the second tier. At Sabadell in that season, he got three strikes in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “It’s a common path: transfers, releases. If you turn it round, work, believe, and if one day they need someone where you play, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. When they decided to call again, it was a dream come true. Lifting the cup, compete continentally, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. All the more so after the prior campaign which, sometimes, was involved suffering. From top scorer with sixteen goals, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
