Should Bellingham aims to force his way into England’s top starting eleven, it would be smart to do away with the dramatics. The way he reacted upon realizing that the substitute board was going up following a night of inconsistency in the match against Albania was unacceptable.

"I prefer not to blow it out of proportion but I stick to my words 'behaviour is key' and consideration for the teammates who come in," commented the coach. "Decisions are made and you must accept them when you're on the field."

The midfielder must understand. There was no need for a strop. Harry Kane had just put the Three Lions 2-0 up in a meaningless fixture, with only six minutes remaining and he, after a below-par performance, received a caution for a foul on an opponent. This was hardly a controversial substitution. In fact it would have been foolish for Tuchel to not substitute him because it was possible Bellingham would be suspended of the initial fixture of the World Cup by picking up a second yellow card.

Turning the Spotlight to Himself

Yet Bellingham made himself the center of attention. There was no disguising the 22-year-old’s disappointment upon understanding that his replacement was ready for another player. He threw his arms up and while he exchanged a handshake after making his way to the touchline it was obvious that Tuchel was displeased.

Here lies the test that Bellingham must overcome. He congratulated Rashford for providing the assist for Kane to nod home his second of the night, but his other actions was counterproductive. It's not like complaining was going to change Tuchel’s mind. The German has stressed repeatedly respecting team hierarchies and the necessity of behaving correctly.

In the Spotlight

Bellingham, not included in the previous squad, has faced close inspection after returning to the fold this month. Essentially he has been on trial and he has not done himself any favours through his behavior to being taken off as England wrapped up a perfect qualifying campaign by overcoming a tough opposition from their opponents.

Tactics and Formation

It means opinions are divided on if the squad operate most effectively with Bellingham in the team. The evidence here was not definitive. Some new ideas were tested by the coach in the beginning. Under him, England have gained England organization and direction in recent months, using a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder, an attacking midfielder and specialist wingers, but there was a different feel versus Albania. Quansah was handed his international debut, Wharton made his first start for England and the role of Stones as a makeshift midfielder created a similar look to the Manchester club's team that won three trophies.

Mixed Performance

Bellingham was a mixed bag. He set up a shot for his teammate in the latter period but often looked overly eager to shine. There were a lot of hurried and errant passes. A pointless clash with an Albania midfielder in the early stages. England's play was messy after halftime. One Albania chance followed he lost the ball cheaply. His booking came after he lost the ball by Broja and committed a foul on the former Chelsea striker.

Depth Makes the Difference

Finally the bench quality proved crucial. Tuchel threw on Phil Foden, who looked better suited to the spot that Bellingham had played earlier in the match, and Saka. In time Saka provided a corner for Harry Kane to break the deadlock. It highlighted that corners and free-kicks will play a key role next summer.

Relationship Not Broken

Still, though, Bellingham was the story. The quality of the winger's delivery for Kane's goal was somewhat overlooked in the ridiculousness of the substitution incident. When the match concluded, everyone was watching Bellingham. The coach approached behind him and guided the player towards the English fans. The bond between them is not broken. Tuchel is not willing to abandon him at this stage. However, whether the coach is prepared to offer him a starring role is not guaranteed.
